Description

Marjoram Essential Oil (Origanum majorana) distilled leaf oil

Our Marjoram Essential Oil has a warm woody spicy aroma and a deeply relaxing character. Steam distilled from a bushy perennial herb with oval leaves and small whitish flowers.

Marjoram has a pale yellow to amber colour and a thin consistency.

Marjoram is deeply relaxing making it ideal for stress-related conditions or anxiety, as well as sleep problems. It has pain relieving properties which are beneficial for muscular aches and pains. Its relaxing properties can also be helpful for some digestive issues, especially where stress is a triggering factor.

Marjoram is thought to have originated in Asia, but is now grown all over Europe. It grows in abundance in Tunisia and known as khezama, the Arab name for lavender and carpets the fields between almond and olive trees. The name Marjoram originates from the Greek word meaning “joy of the mountains” and is a symbol of love and honour, indeed young married couples would wear crowns made of its flowers.

Used by the ancient Greeks in perfumes, cosmetics and medicine.  It also has a long history of use as a culinary herb. Although related to oregano it is much more gentle in both aroma and action.
