Mandarin Essential Oil (Citrus reticulata) expressed peel oil

Our Mandarin Essential Oil has an intensely sweet citrus scent and a fresh calming effect. Expressed from the peel of the fleshy orange fruit of a small spreading evergreen tree.

Dating back thousands of years to traditional Chinese medicine, mandarin is known to be the sweetest and the most calming of the citrus essential oils.  Mandarin is very mild and known for its many healing properties. For instance, useful in helping to reduce acne, brighten the skin, alleviate insomnia, reduce oily skin, diminish the appearance of scars and age spots.

Mandarin has a yellow-orange to orange-brown colour and a thin consistency.

Mandarin is one of the more gentle and relaxing of the Citrus oils. Regarded as a safe children’s remedy in France and is one of our favourite children’s oils. It has a gentle calming nature which can help soothe the atmosphere.

Considered an uplifting oil, Mandarin is one of the best for boosting your mood when feeling down. Its relaxing but uplifting nature makes Mandarin ideal to use for inhalation or in a diffuser to raise the mood, such as for anxiety or depression, or other stress-related conditions. It is also useful for oily or congested skin.

Use Mandarin in your diffuser, or dilute in an appropriate carrier oil to apply to the skin.  Mandarin is one of the citrus essential oils with a low risk of phototoxicity – however we recommend for safety not to use Mandarin topically within 12 hours of exposure to the sun as a precaution.

How to Use

For Adults only (Please seek professional advice for any other use)

Diffusion: use 6-8 drops in water in your diffuser

Massage: add 10-15 drops to 1 tablespoon (20ml) of your choice of carrier oil or unscented massage oil.
(Caution – Mandarin may cause photosensitisation – we recommend avoiding sun exposure for 12 hours after topical use of this essential oil – see below for more information)

Baths: mix  3-4 drops with a teaspoon (5ml) of Essential Oil Dispersant or Unscented Liquid Soapp and add to your bath water.

General Safety Information

As Mandarin is an expressed citrus oil it may cause phototoxicity. Phototoxity is where certain chemicals called furanocoumarins induce a skin reaction in the presence of strong sunlight. This results in the skin cells absorbing more UV photons than normal, which results in a more rapid tanning or burning skin reaction. Furanocoumarins are commonly found in citrus essential oils, such as Mandarin.

The risk of phototoxicity will remain for 12 hours. So if you topically apply one of these essential oils to your skin, avoid sun and UV exposure for at least 12 hours. If you’re diffusing one of these oils in your home, no need to worry. This applies to topical application to the skin, not inhalation
