Bergamot Essential Oil (Citrus bergamia) expressed peel oil

Our Bergamot Essential Oil is fresh and bright with a gentle citrus aroma. Pressed from the inedible fruit of the bergamot tree, it is uplifting and soothing for the emotions, and calming stress and tension.

The colour ranges from light greenish-yellow to olive-green and the oil has a watery consistency.

Bergamot is a relaxing citrus oil and as such is ideal for any condition where stress is a component as it inspires positive feelings of calm. So helpful for staying centred during a stressful day or for preparing your mind for sleep. In addition, Bergamot can support physical relaxation where stress results in tension in the body.

The aroma of Bergamot Essential Oil is reminiscent of other citrus essential oils.  However it is more delicate and complex due to its underlying floral character.

The Earl Grey tea blend is a fragrant, citrus-flavored tea blend made with the addition of bergamot oil. Bergamot is what gives Earl Grey tea its unique taste and aroma.

It is also extremely popular in perfumery and a vital ingredient in many perfumes.  In fact Bergamot was one of the components of the original Eau de Cologne.

Bergamot is great oil to enjoy in the diffuser, use topically, or in the bath.

The Bergamot tree is grown in many parts of the world, but achieved its prominence and name in the town of Bergamo in southern Italy. Hence the name Bergamot.

Note – Bergamot can cause the skin to become more sensitive to the sun.  It is not recommended for topical application within 12 hours of sun exposure.

How to Use

For Adults only (Please seek professional advice for any other use)

Diffusion: use 6-8 drops in water in your diffuser

Massage: add 10 – 15 drops to 1 tablespoon (20ml) of your choice of carrier oil or unscented massage oil.
(Caution – Bergamot may cause photosensitisation – we recommend avoiding sun exposure for 12 hours after topical use of this essential oil – see below for more information)

Baths: mix  3-4 drops with a teaspoon (5ml) of Essential Oil Dispersant or Unscented Liquid Soap and add to your bath water.

General Safety Information

As Bergamot is an expressed citrus oil it may cause phototoxicity. Phototoxity is where certain chemicals called furanocoumarins induce a skin reaction in the presence of strong sunlight. This results in the skin cells absorbing more UV photons than normal, which results in a burning skin reaction. Furanocoumarins are commonly found in expressed citrus essential oils, such as Bergamot.

The risk of phototoxicity may remain for 12 hours. So if you topically apply one of these essential oils to your skin, avoid sun and UV exposure for at least 12 hours. If you’re diffusing one of these oils in your home, no need to worry. This applies to topical application to the skin, not inhalation
